The People of Western Australia’s Ghost Towns Project will be FamilyHistoryWA’s contribution to Western Australia’s Bicentenary and will also mark the society’s 50th anniversary. This project, led by a dedicated volunteer team, aims to create a comprehensive index of the individuals who once resided in Western Australia’s ghost towns, to locate all their records and tell their stories.
Western Australia’s size, it vast distances, its boom and bust and unforgiving climate have left us with many places where once there was life and now has gone or almost gone. What remains may only be a crumbled down structure or grid patterns of a few streets which have now all but gone back to the bush. The project will ensure that these places and the people are not forgotten.
The People of Western Australia’s Ghost Towns Project will include information from all found sources as well as historical, demographic and geographical data, on all known ghost towns, abandoned towns, settlements and similar places.

We celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders of all communities who also work and live on this land.

As the project gets under way, we are still building our list of towns. We expect this to take quite some time. For now, we intend to simply list the towns here and ask you to check to see if you know about one or more that we have missed.
If you want to know more about the project, or you want to tell us about a community that we may not yet have included in our list, please contact us.
