In 1896, three Coolgardie prospectors discovered a rich gold reef near Mount Leonora, about 230km north of Kalgoorlie and Boulder. The Sons of Gwalia mine opened the following year, surrounded by a growing miners’ settlement of tents and rough shanties built of corrugated iron, timber and canvas2.
