Our project aims to document the lives of the people who lived in Western Australia’s Ghost Towns.1 To do this, the first thing we need is a list of the communities that is as comprehensive as it can possibly be. Our first list numbered about 250, and we now have over 550. The list is growing every day. Many places have had names changes over time; some have had multiple names. We are trying to capture all of this information.
The first and most obvious way to present the list is alphabetically. And you can find the alphabetical listing here. But we know that a lot of people want to be able to visit these lost communities and so we have created a second list that presents the communities by Region and by Local Government Authority. This second list also contains a complete list of the communities about which we know very little as yet. If you find that you can help us to know and understand these communities please reach out to us via our contact form. Our third list shows all of the ghost towns by phase – it provides an indication not only of what towns are currently being researached, but also when you can expect a particular town to move into the active phase of the project.
Return frequently to check the list as it is changing on a daily basis. And enjoy the State’s history!
Footnote
- The project team prefer to call the places on our list communities, because not all of them are or were actual towns. But I’m sure that you understand that we are using the popular term, Ghost Towns, that everyone knows so that everyone knows what we are talking about! ↩︎
